The newly-crowned Rose of Mayo, Louisburgh native Edwenia O’Malley, will perform her first official function for her home community this Friday night (April 26, 2013).
The University College, Dublin, student will officially launch the club’s hosting of the popular comedy play The Pull in Hotel Westport at 8.45pm.
“We are very honoured that Edwenia will be present for what will be her first formal Louisburgh-related event as Rose of Mayo, and it is particularly apt because she plays football with Louisburgh,” said Eddie Ball of Louisburgh GAA club.
Edwenia was chosen as the Rose of Mayo at last Saturday night’s gala contest in the TF Royal Theatre, Castlebar. She will now represent Mayo in the regional finals in Portlaoise from May 30th to June 2nd in the hope of being picked as an entrant in the 53rd Rose of Tralee this summer.
A physiotherapist, she is currently studying for a PhD at UCD.
The Pull is a play by Mayo-based theatre production company Half Solid Productions, and is performed by the writers John Corless and Liam Horan.
“It’s about a GAA club that runs into some financial trouble, but it’s not nearly as big a deal as they think. Basically, Ballybore GAA club are only €1,000 in debt but it feels like €1m to the main people involved in the club. They set about trying to solve the problem and decide to pull a truck around their home town to raise money and get themselves in the Guinness Book of Records. Chaos ensues and they end up getting in way over their heads”, explained Liam.
Tickets, costing €10, can be purchased on the door, or from club members. The event doubles as a fund-raiser for Louisburgh GAA club. More on halfsolid.com/louisburgh.
